Song Mei (宋梅), also known as Song Jinxuan Mei (宋锦旋梅) or Jinxuan (锦旋), is one of the traditional famous cultivars of Chinese orchids and a representative variety of plum-blossom-shaped flowers.
This orchid was selected by Song Jinxuan (宋锦璇) of Shaoxing during the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty (1736-1795). Its name combines Song Jinxuan's surname with the characteristic plum-blossom form of its flower.
The flower is known for its dignified and elegant appearance. It is ranked as the foremost among the Four Great Famous Varieties of Spring Orchid and, together with the variety 'Long Zi' (龙字), is hailed as one of the "Two National Treasures of Chinese Orchids".
Key Notes on Translation Choices:
-
老八种 (Lǎo Bā Zhǒng): Translated as "Eight Famous Varieties" to convey its status. "Old Eight Types" is also possible but less descriptive.
-
宋锦璇 (Sòng Jǐnxuán): Used the pinyin spelling Song Jinxuan. Adding "of Shaoxing" provides context.
-
梅瓣花 (Méi Bàn Huā): Translated as "plum-blossom-shaped flowers". This is the standard term for orchid flowers where the petals (especially the lip and sepals) have a rounded, cupped shape resembling plum blossoms.
-
花名 (Huā Míng): Rendered as "Its name" for natural flow.
-
端庄大方 (Duānzhuāng Dàfāng): Translated as "dignified and elegant appearance" to capture the aesthetic appreciation.
-
春兰四大名种之首 (Chūnlán Sì Dà Míng Zhǒng zhī Shǒu): Translated as "foremost among the Four Great Famous Varieties of Spring Orchid".
-
国兰双璧 (Guó Lán Shuāng Bì): Translated as "Two National Treasures of Chinese Orchids". "璧" (bì) refers to a valuable jade disc, symbolizing priceless treasures. "Chinese Orchids" (国兰, Guó Lán) specifically refers to the traditional, scented cymbidium orchids of East Asia (like 春兰), distinct from tropical orchids.
-
花期11-3月 有香味: Added contextually at the top: One of the Eight Famous Varieties of Spring Orchid. Blooming period: November to March. Fragrant. 🌼
Regarding the "Old Eight" list:
The translation focuses on the detailed description of Song Mei. The list of names itself (宋梅、集园、龙字、万字、汪字、小打梅、贺神梅、桂圆梅) is best transliterated using Pinyin for recognition:
-
The Spring Orchid 'Old Eight' Varieties: Song Mei, Ji Yuan, Long Zi, Wan Zi, Wang Zi, Xiao Da Mei, He Shen Mei, Gui Yuan Mei.
