The Legend of Imperial Orchids:
Legend has it that during the Song Dynasty, Emperor Taizu (Zhao Kuangyin) himself was an enthusiast of the Four Seasons Orchid (Si Ji Lan - likely referring to Cymbidium ensifolium types). He decreed that superior specimens be presented annually as tribute (Gong) from regions like Fujian and Guangdong. Subsequent dynasties continued this tradition of offering exquisite orchids to the emperors, leading to the creation of many famous names ending in "Da Gong" (Great Tribute). The renowned Guangdong variety "Silver Edge Great Tong" (Yin Bian Da Gong) is believed to be one such imperial tribute orchid.

Characteristics of Silver Edge Great Tribute (Yin Bian Da Gong):

  • Elegant Foliage: Graceful, drifting leaf posture with a beautiful overall form. Leaves boast a good sheen.

  • Stable Variegation: Features stable silver-white edges (variegation). It tolerates strong light well – even under bright conditions, the edges typically only turn yellow rather than scorching black.

  • Robust & Long-Lived: Old growth (backbulbs) declines slowly. It's very easy to cultivate into a large, impressive specimen.

  • Floral Display: Produces tall, upright flower spikes bearing numerous blooms. The base of the lip (hypochile) exhibits a delicate, pale pink hue, creating an effect of exceptional purity and elegance.

  • Signature Fragrance: The fragrance deserves special mention: pure, clear, and perfectly balanced. When even a single spike blooms, its compelling, refreshing scent is irresistible and powerfully fills the air, demanding attention.

  • Flowering Habit: Its blooming period coincides poetically with the Mid-Autumn Festival, embodying the meaning of "beautiful flowers under a full moon" (花好月圆). It flowers between June and December and is capable of blooming 3 to 4 times annually. Truly a prolific bloomer and an outstanding variety.
