History: Selected by Liu A'yu (刘阿余) of Tangli, Shaoxing, before the Second Sino-Japanese War (pre-1937). Later sold to Xie Ruishan (谢瑞山) of Suzhou, who named it "Rui Mei" (incorporating his own name "Rui").

Characteristics:

Flower:

Outer three petals tightly rounded with pointed tips.

Divided column (分窠, fēn kē - separated pollinia).

"Liu Hai" lip (刘海舌, Liúhǎi shé - distinct, forward-curving lip resembling traditional bangs).

Flowers held horizontally (flat shoulder) with upright,端正的花容端正 posture.Long blooming period.

Foliage:

Semi-pendant leaves.

Pale purple-green bracts.

Dark green leaves with sharp tips.

Shallow leaf veins.

Tall sheath (脚壳, jiǎo ké - pseudobulb/leaf base covering).

Growth habit: Slanting-pendant; central leaves semi-erect, outer leaves semi-pendant.

Leaf color: Deep green with a glossy sheen.

Dimensions:

Width: 0.6–0.8 cm (up to 1 cm).

Texture: Thick and firm.

Veination:

Distinct shallow V-shaped groove (deeper near base, shallower toward tip).

Slightly raised midrib on the underside.

Margins: Serrated (finely toothed).

Tip: Sharply pointed.

Sheath (脚壳):

Tall, not clasping the leaf base.

Sheath tip soft.

Bud: Short and round, reddish-purple with green hue, tipped with fine white granules.
