Money Acorus (Oscar Acorus gramineus), also known as Stone Sweet Flag, has thick, narrow, glossy leaves that release a long-lasting, sweet, aromatic fragrance when touched — which is why it is poetically called “Follow-Hand Fragrance” (随手香) in Chinese tradition.
In Chinese culture, Sweet Flag (Acorus) is regarded as one of the “Four Noble Plants” together with orchid, narcissus, and chrysanthemum — symbols of refinement, purity, and scholarly elegance.
Since the Song Dynasty, literati and scholars have favored cultivating Acorus gramineus as a small desk plant, scholar’s studio companion, or miniature bonsai, placing it on writing tables to enjoy its quiet beauty and gentle scent.
The Sweet Flag commonly hung at doorways during the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu Festival) to ward off evil, repel insects, and dispel dampness is the water-growing type — Acorus calamus, often called “Water Sword” because its long, sword-like leaves stand upright. This is the wetland species.
By contrast, the Acorus beloved by scholars and placed on study desks is Acorus gramineus, the stone-growing or rock-loving Sweet Flag that thrives among stones and shallow water. Among its many cultivated varieties, three are especially prized:
- Money Acorus (金钱蒲) — short, broad, coin-shaped leaves; compact habit; the most popular for bonsai and desk display
- Tiger Whisker Acorus (虎须蒲) — long, narrow, whisker-like leaves; graceful and flowing appearance
- Green Sprout Acorus (青苗蒲) — fresh, bright green foliage; vigorous growth
Acorus gramineus (Japanese Sweet Flag, Grass-leaved Sweet Flag, Dwarf Sweet Flag) remains a favorite today among indoor plant enthusiasts, bonsai collectors, and people seeking small, low-maintenance, fragrant greenery for desks, shelves, terrariums, water features, or Asian-style planting arrangements.
